A little community service never hurt no one

Inmates in a prison in the town of Santa Rita do Sapucai in Brazil are pedalling their way to freedom under a new program involving stationary bikes and street lamps. The program uses four bicycles contributed by the police department and car batteries and converters donated by local businesses to turn prisoner's 8 hour shifts on the bikes into the 110 volts of power needed to light a row of street lamps along a riverside promenade. The prisoners, in turn, get a day taken off their sentence for every 8 hour shift pedalled.
UK take note!
